The North Dakota State Hospital History and Museum Project
The North Dakota State Hospital predates statehood. It was authorized by the Dakota Territory Legislative Assembly in 1883 and opened in 1885.
In some respects, its history mirrored national trends regarding the care of persons with mental illness — or perceived mental illness. In some respects, its operation was affected by events and opinions unique to North Dakota.
The purpose of the North Dakota State Hospital History and Museum Project is to preserve and share the hospital’s history, whether good or bad, mundane or unusual. This history belongs to all of us and from it we can learn how to better respect and care for persons with mental illness.
